Showcasing Student Innovation with AI

IN collaboration with the postgraduate department of architecture studies at the toronto metropolitan university, the intersections between ai and architecture practice were explored through replicating selected images using only ai tools, and creating digital architecture products from scratch using only ai for coding. 

The postgraduate studio of 12 students focused on exploring the possible using AI for image. video, 3D modelling, and digital product development. The students were all able to successfully deploy impressive digital products addressing specific problems identified as shown below.

IMAGE GENERATION

The goal of these images was to ask AI to generate two types of homes. a tiny home and an eco-home. Using a sketch, AI generated both images very literally, precise to the sketch provided, however the output was not as successful.

  • For this project, the students were asked to take a sample image and recreate it as closely as possible using only AI tools, some of the most promising results came from combining sketches and prompts using Formas.AI as it provided the students with more creative control.

DIGITAL PRODUCTS

A collection of AI generated web apps that allowed the students express their ideas for digital products of the future for architecture.

PLAN AI

  • Created using Lovable.dev ai tools and City of Toronto Open Data

PlanAI is a generative building design tool that incorporates site-specific
information, contemporary theory and best practices for urban planning and
design, and zoning information, climate data, and other environmental
statistics to generate, analyze, suggest, and offer design strategies for initial
concepts of schematic buildings.

A digital app created to support discovery, reuse, and reduction of  environmental impact through comprehensive material assessment and procurement methods.

Using a set of Interior, Exterior and Product based images, the students were tasked with creating 3D mesh models using only AI tools. The Images displayed show some of their most promising outcomes.

The videos below where generated by the stiudent susing only prompts and AI tools. The aim was to create a cohesive visual narrative using only AI that could surpass some of the current limitations of video generating AI tools such as duration (limited to 8 seconds) and transitions

    AI perpetuated stereotypes about race and class, sometimes in very blatant, over-the-top, and potentially
    offensive ways.

    There is a substantial amount of critical thinkng involved in prompting the AI.

    We should treat AI as an efficiency tool that helps us deliver our design intention, rather than as a tool that becomes the AI that clicks
    buttons to mass-produce meaningless results devoid of any human thought.

    While people of varying backgrounds and abilities are able to dip their hands into new methods of production
    (such as coding, learning new things, image production, video
    editing, etc.), the use of AI cannot provide people with skills, but 
    simply a trial period of whatever medium of AI production that is
    used.
